AIO / GEO

Being found, understood, cited and described correctly by AI answer engines — retrievable pages, a clear account of who you are, answers that stand on their own, and evidence worth citing.

AIO and GEO — AI optimisation and generative engine optimisation — are two names for one effort: making sure that when someone asks an AI system about your field, the answer includes you, cites you and describes you correctly. Answer engines retrieve sources, read passages and write a synthesis. Whether you appear depends on whether your content can be found, understood, trusted and quoted. The Guild's line on it is short: be the answer before the click.

The term GEO comes from a 2023 research paper that tested how changes to content affect its visibility in generated answers. For most businesses the practical work is less exotic than the name. Google, for one, says there are no special requirements to appear in its AI features beyond the foundations of search. What makes the difference is a clear account of who you are, answers that stand on their own, evidence worth citing — and checking what the answers actually say.

Questions this topic answers

  • What do AI assistants say about us today, and is it accurate?
  • Why are we missing from answers when we rank in search?
  • Which AI crawlers should we allow, and on which parts of the site?
  • How do we correct an answer engine that describes us wrongly?
  • How do we measure presence in answers that change every time we ask?

  1. Designing for AI Answer Engines — the playbook: entity clarity, answer-first structure, evidence, and how to measure the result.
  2. Building a modern company Knowledge Center — one governed source of what the company knows, written once and served to staff, customers, agents and answer engines.
  3. What happens when one knowledge asset is distributed across ten channels — keeping one source accurate wherever it is republished, so the facts agree everywhere.
  4. RAG architecture — the same problem seen from inside an AI system: how passages are retrieved, ranked and cited.
  5. SEO — the foundation that search engines and answer engines share.

Key ideas

  • Retrievable — pages crawlers can fetch and read without running scripts, and crawler access rules that are a deliberate business decision.
  • Entity clarity — who you are, what you do, for whom and where, stated the same way on your site, your profiles and in structured data.
  • Answer-first passages — the answer in the first sentences under a clear heading, so a passage can be quoted on its own.
  • Evidence and citation signals — original figures, methods, named experts, dates, and consistent mentions elsewhere.
  • Accuracy before presence — being mentioned with an old service or a wrong price is a problem to fix, not a win.
  • Answers vary — test a fixed set of questions repeatedly, across several engines, and read the trend rather than single results.
  • No shortcuts — invented reviews, misleading markup or unsupported claims damage the trust these systems, and buyers, rely on.

Where this knowledge is put to work

Content & AI search visibility starts with a GEO audit — a visibility baseline, the authority gaps and a 90-day action map — and continues as an engine of expert content, technical improvements, distribution and AI answer visibility monitoring. Digital Presence builds the same capabilities into a modernised website.

Wondering what AI assistants say about your business? Ask them, write down the answers, and start there.
